Gas Repairs in Sydney — The Hills, North West, Northern Sydney & Hawkesbury

If you can smell gas, turn it off at the meter, open up the house, don’t touch any switches, and get everyone outside before you ring. Gas work is licensed work — and for good reason.

Gas Problems Are Different

Most plumbing faults give you time to think. Gas doesn’t. If there’s a smell of gas in or around the property, the priority is isolating the supply and getting everyone out into fresh air — before anyone starts diagnosing anything. No light switches, no phones inside, no flames.

Beyond leaks, gas work covers a lot of everyday problems: a cooktop that won’t light, a heater cutting out, an appliance that was never connected properly, a line that needs extending for a new kitchen, or a compliance certificate you need for a sale or a landlord obligation.

All of it is licensed work in NSW. That isn’t red tape — gas faults carry real consequences, and the testing and certification requirements exist because of them. Every job we do is carried out by a licensed gas fitter and tested before the supply goes back on.

Quick check

Do You Need a Gas Fitter?

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth booking rather than waiting.

If you can smell gas right now, stop reading and isolate the supply at the meter, open the doors and windows, get everyone outside, and ring from outdoors.

Know the warning signs

Warning Signs on a Gas System

Some of these are urgent and some aren’t — but none of them should be left.

The clearest warning there is. Isolate at the meter, ventilate, no ignition sources, everyone outside, then ring.

A burner should burn blue. A lazy yellow flame indicates incomplete combustion and needs checking.

Staining around an appliance or flue is a combustion problem, not a cleaning problem.

Commonly a thermocouple, gas control or flue issue on older appliances.

Audible escape at a connection — treat as urgent.

A bill climbing without a change in habits can indicate a leak somewhere on the line.

Get out into fresh air and seek medical advice. Faulty combustion can produce carbon monoxide, which has no smell.

Anything connected by an unlicensed person needs checking and certifying.

Why it happened

Why Gas Systems Develop Faults

Gas faults usually trace back to age, workmanship or servicing — rarely to anything the occupant did.

Ageing pipework and fittings

Older gas lines and joints degrade over time. Threaded connections and seals in particular loosen or perish with age and thermal cycling.

Unlicensed or poor previous work

Appliances connected by someone unlicensed are one of the more common problems we find — often working, but not compliant or safe.

Appliance wear

Thermocouples, gas control valves and ignition components have finite lives, particularly on heaters and older cooktops.

Blocked or damaged flues

A flue that can’t vent properly causes incomplete combustion, which is where the yellow flames, soot and carbon monoxide risk come from.

Ground movement and building work

Reactive soils and renovation work put stress on buried and concealed gas lines.

Lack of servicing

Gas appliances need periodic servicing. Skipped servicing is behind a large share of the faults we attend.

What happens when we arrive

How a Gas Repair Works

No guesswork and no surprise bills. Every job runs the same way, so you know what’s happening and what it costs before work begins.

01
Safety first

If there's any suspicion of a leak, the supply is isolated and the area ventilated before anything else happens.

02
We locate the fault

Leak detection equipment and a pressure test on the line identify whether the problem is the line, a fitting or the appliance itself.

03
We isolate the affected section

So the rest of the system can be assessed safely, and so we know exactly what we're dealing with.

04
You get the scope and the price

What's failed, what it takes to fix, and what it costs — before the repair goes ahead.

05
We carry out the repair

All work by a licensed gas fitter, to Australian Standards and the relevant gas installation requirements.

06
We test and certify

The system is pressure tested and the appliance checked for correct combustion before the supply is restored. A compliance certificate is issued where the work requires one.

Honest advice

Repair the Line, or Repair the Appliance?

Half of gas callouts turn out to be the appliance rather than the gas supply. Testing tells us which.

What the camera shows

Pressure drop on the line

Usual Recommendation

Line or fitting repair

Reason

The escape is in the pipework, not the appliance — the line gets located and repaired.

What the camera shows

Line holds, appliance won't light

Usual Recommendation

Appliance repair

Reason

Ignition, thermocouple or gas control components on the appliance itself.

What the camera shows

Yellow flame, line sound

Usual Recommendation

Combustion or flue investigation

Reason

Usually air supply, burner condition or a restricted flue rather than a gas fault.

What the camera shows

Older appliance, repeated faults

Usual Recommendation

Repair versus replacement discussion

Reason

On an ageing appliance, parts availability often decides it.

What the camera shows

Non-compliant previous installation

Usual Recommendation

Rectification and certification

Reason

It may be working, but it needs bringing to standard and certifying.

You’ll be told which of these applies and what each path costs before anything is carried out.

Cost & timing

What Affects the Cost

Gas repairs are priced on what testing reveals, so we don’t quote firm numbers before attending.

Line versus appliance

A fitting repair and an appliance control replacement are very different jobs.

Locating the fault

A leak at an accessible fitting is quick. Tracing one on a concealed or buried line takes longer.

Access

Exposed pipework is straightforward. Under floors, in walls or in a roof space adds time.

Parts

Common appliance components are readily available; older or imported units may need sourcing.

Certification

Where the work requires a compliance certificate, testing and documentation form part of the job.

Timing

Standard hours differ from after-hours attendance. Policy: [confirm]

How long does it take?

Leak detection and testing

Commonly completed within the first visit.

Usually the same visit.

Same visit where the part is a common one; otherwise once sourced.

Longer — locating the fault and gaining access are the bulk of the work.

Scheduled work, quoted separately after an on-site assessment.

Gas Repairs — Your Questions Answered

Written as a real conversation with the plumber — your question, our answer.

I can smell gas — what do I do right now?

Turn the gas off at the meter if you can safely reach it, open doors and windows, and get everyone outside. Don’t touch light switches, don’t use your phone inside, and don’t light anything. Ring us from outdoors — or emergency services if the smell is strong or anyone feels unwell.

A suspected gas leak is treated as an emergency and we respond accordingly; our after-hours availability is [confirm with David]. Non-urgent gas work — an appliance connection, a certificate, a heater that’s playing up — is usually better booked in normal hours and will typically cost you less.

With any suspected leak, we start by isolating and testing rather than looking. A pressure test on the installation tells us whether gas is escaping from the line, and leak detection equipment narrows down where. If the line holds pressure, we move on to the appliance itself, because that’s where the fault often turns out to be.

Yes, it’s worth having looked at. A blue flame means the gas is burning cleanly; yellow or orange means incomplete combustion, which is less efficient and can produce carbon monoxide. It’s usually a burner, air supply or flue issue rather than a gas leak, but it isn’t something to leave running.

Often it’s repairable — thermocouples, ignition components and gas control valves are all replaceable parts. The deciding factor is usually the age of the appliance and whether parts are still available for it. We’ll tell you what the repair costs and whether it’s sensible given what the unit’s got left.

Leak detection and testing is usually done within the first visit, and an accessible fitting repair often the same. Appliance parts depend on availability. A leak on a concealed or buried line takes longer, because locating it and getting access is most of the job.

If it’s a smell, isolate at the meter and stay outside — that’s the priority. Otherwise, clear access to the meter and the appliance, and have the brand, model and rough age handy if you can find it. Please don’t try to relight or adjust a gas appliance yourself in the meantime.

Mainly whether the fault is on the gas line or in the appliance, and how accessible it is. A leaking fitting you can see is quick; tracing a leak on a line buried under a driveway is a very different job. If the work needs a compliance certificate, the testing and documentation form part of it too.

Yes — the supply is isolated before any gas work starts, without exception. It goes back on only after the installation has been pressure tested and the appliance checked for correct operation. We’ll let you know roughly how long it’ll be off so you can plan around cooking or heating.

If there’s any smell of gas, no — the whole supply should stay off until we’ve tested it. If it’s a single appliance fault with no smell, the others are generally fine to use, but leave the faulty one alone entirely. When in doubt, isolate at the meter and ring us.

Yes. Gas fitting is licensed work in NSW, including connecting an appliance that looks simple. Beyond the safety side, work done by an unlicensed person can affect your insurance and creates problems at sale or lease. Our licence is 210933C, and you’re welcome to verify it.

Yes, where the work carried out requires one. Certification follows the testing, so it’s issued once the installation has been checked and confirmed compliant. Tell us at booking that you need it and what it’s for — a sale, a lease, or a specific appliance installation — so it’s issued correctly.

It can be, and it’s worth testing. A small escape on a line won’t necessarily be strong enough to smell but will still register on your usage. A pressure test on the installation settles it quickly, and if the line holds we’d look at appliance efficiency and combustion instead.

Yes — appliance connection is standard licensed gas work, whether it’s a new cooktop, oven, heater or gas hot water unit. We’ll check the existing line is suitable for the appliance’s requirements, connect it, test it, and certify the work where certification is required. If the line needs extending or upgrading, we’ll quote that before proceeding.

Service your gas appliances at the interval the manufacturer recommends — that alone prevents most of the faults we attend. Keep an eye on flame colour and any soot marks, keep flues and vents clear, and consider a carbon monoxide alarm if you have indoor gas appliances. And only ever use a licensed gas fitter, even for a job that looks trivial.
